Process & Fees

General Process

  1. Susan will meet client in person (if local) or on the phone to discuss what client wants (subject matter, canvas size, composition, etc.), timing/scheduling, and fees, and to arrange future sitting(s).
  2. Susan will travel to the sitting location; sitting will take probably 2 -3 hours to set up (client dress, lighting/props), take pictures, do sketches.
  3. Susan will send rough draft composition via e-mail for client review/approval; once approved and contract signed, 50% of fee payment is required.
  4. Complete painting – one to two months to complete for a head/shoulders portrait or simple ¾ figure, more depending on size/complexity.
  5. Susan will request final approval via e-mail, before delivery of painting.
  6. Payment due at time of delivery (If local, Susan will deliver.)

Memorial paintings
After discussing the project with the client, Susan will need to review the available photographs. If the painting looks feasible, then the same process will follow as the others - she will send a rough draft composition for approval, etc.

Fees
Fees quoted are to complete a commissioned oil painting and are finalized when rough composition draft (via e-mail) is approved by the client. Signed contract and 50% of the agreed-upon fee (plus to-date travel costs) will be due at that time, in order to proceed on the painting.

Prices are per figure. 50% more for additional figure. Portrait backgrounds are simple; higher fee if more complex. Travel, postage, insurance and any applicable sales tax are additional, as are the inclusion of pets. Canvas sizing is approximate for pricing purposes, exact sizing depends on client’s needs and painting composition.
